The Superior Herbal System™

An Ancient Idea that Makes Real Sense Today

According to ancient texts attributed to Shen Nong, the great cultural hero and early emperor of China, there are three classes of herbs – Superior, General and Inferior.

“The Superior Herbs may be used for an extended period of time by anyone, without side effects, to supplement the energies, promote circulation in the body, and prolong the years of life.

The General Herbs may be used intermittently to prevent illness and to balance depletion. Extended use is undesirable.

The Inferior Herbs may be used for short periods of time, under careful supervision, to relieve stagnation of any sort, and to cure illnesses.  Extended use will cause harm.”

This classification system gave perspective to the health arts of Asia and gave the Chinese an early start in delineating the unique character of the Superior Herbalism that forms the foundation of Chinese medicine.

In our desire to overcome disease, we have forgotten that it is more important to support the energy and functions of the body than to wait until we are ill and then treat the problem with “inferior,” herbs and drugs, that is, herbs or medicines that have side effects. In this way we become highly resistant to disease.

As a thoughtful student of the health-and-longevity arts or as a health practitioner, wouldn’t you rather be practicing the Superior Herbal System? Doesn’t it just make sense that it is better to do everything in our power to promote the optimal functioning of our body and mind so that we establish true health and maintain that health so that we can live a long and fruitful life, free from disease and suffering? Wouldn’t you rather be consuming and providing herbs that “supplement the energies and promote circulation in the body and prolong the years of life?”

Step Up to Dragon Herbs!
Why modern herbalism falls short

The herbalism that is currently being promoted in the United States is a non-system. It is a hodge-podge of individual herbs and products – without a cohesive system. Products from all over the world, some of which are very good, and some of which are not very effective, are unfortunately being promoted on a one-by-one basis. There is no holistic system to fit the herbs into.

The body is one whole. All of the organs and functions of the body are integrated, and each depends on the others to be working harmoniously for us to live and to thrive. The body is also one with the mind and emotions. These aspects of our being cannot be separated. And the body-mind-spirit is one with the environment, with nature and with the universe. Influences in the weather, magnetic forces, and social environment all influence our body-mind-spirit very directly.

If it is the goal to attain true health, it is impossible to treat one aspect of our body without considering the whole body-mind-spirit. Taking an herb, supplement or drug that targets just one small, albeit important, aspect of our body or mind falls into the same reductionist paradigm that conventional western medicine takes. The disregard for other functions while “treating” one function has led to the situation we are facing in health care today. Side effects are considered normal.

As defined by Shen Nong, most of the herbs being used and promoted in America today fall into the inferior and general classes of herbs. They have medicinal qualities that may be appealing and therapeutically useful, but they are not being used within a system that takes everything into consideration. If you look at only one aspect of your health, you may be missing other important aspects – that is incomplete.

We offer something that is complete

The three treasures system forms the basis of a complete system of healthcare. The Chinese developed a sublimely simple yet complete system of understanding the human being. If you understand the system, then everything else falls into place.

We are offering the complete three treasures program. The Chinese superior herbs nurture the three treasures, which in turn establish health at every level of our being at the same time. The superior herbs are by nature and by definition, regulating. They have double-direction activity, which means that they enhance or diminish functions as required to maintain optimum functioning under every circumstance.

Every function in our body-mind is regulated by some mechanism or central function. Our immune system, body temperature, water balance, sleep-wake cycle, hunger, elimination, hormonal, and every other function are controlled by some central control mechanism. By optimizing the functioning of these central control mechanisms, we can foster radiant health. The Chinese discovered that the herbs that they came to define as “superior” nurture the regulatory mechanisms themselves, and then leave the body to its own devices to maintain radiant health. This lack of direct influence on peripheral functions is the reason why the tonic herbs have so few side effects. Medicinal herbs have side effects because they directly influence peripheral functions, sometimes causing excessive actions in other peripheral functions.

The superior herbal system is complete and automatically regulating. It covers every aspect of the human body-mind-spirit, but does so gently and naturally, in the highest sense. “Natural” is not necessarily synonymous with “safe.” But the superior (tonic) herbs ARE safe. They regulate – they do not stimulate or sedate in a unidirectional manner.

As a result, using the tonic herbs for a period of time within the three treasures system is extraordinarily effective. People experience little if any discomfort and start to see real results and positive changes in their lives within a short period of time.

What is the Superior Herbal System™?

Among the great “tools” discovered by humankind to aid in the attainment of radiant health are the Chinese tonic herbs, also called the “superior herbs” in Asia. The tonic herbs are the elite herbs of the Chinese herbal system, the most fully developed herbal system in the world. The Chinese tonic herbs have always held a very special place in Asian culture. These very special natural substances have been associated with the highest qualities of living, and thus are associated with the ideals of long life, slow aging, glowing health, happiness, wisdom, physical vitality, adaptability, sexual vigor and response, mental acuity and clear intuition, love and compassion, and harmonious relations with nature and with one's fellow human beings. By achieving these goals, one can be said to have attained true "radiant health."

What distinguishes the Chinese Superior Herbal System from other systems has been the attitude the Chinese and other Asian societies have taken toward health.  Putting the emphasis on promoting health, they have created a body of knowledge concerning the health-promoting tonic herbs that no other society or system has matched. Other systems have emphasized the remedial over the preventive, at least as it has come down to us today.

The Three Treasures

The superior herbs have been found over thousands of years and by countless millions of people to promote a long, youthful, radiantly healthy life. The Superior herbs have been found to be extremely safe when used reasonably.

According to Chinese tradition a superior herb must contain an abundance of one or more of the three treasures.  The three treasures are the very basis of human life. They may be compared to the activity of a candle.

Jing = Essence

Jing is like the wax of a candle. It is the essence of all the body’s energy and the basis of your inherited genetic longevity. Jing is the regenerative power of the body. If you have plenty of Jing energy, your candle is substantial and large.

Qi = Vitality

Qi is like the flame of a candle. It is the actual function of the candle and is supported and maintained by the wax. Qi manifests in our daily life as vitality, and it is the functioning that results from the air we breathe and the food we eat. Qi supports our resistance and our capacity to adapt to change and to stress.

Shen = Radiance

Shen is like the light radiating from the candle. It is the harmonization of one’s emotional and psychological energy. It is associated with wisdom and insight, mind power and peace of mind. When the flame is strong the light given off is bright. The radiance of the flame is the purpose of the candle.

The light of the candle is brightest when all three treasures are nourished and maintained.

Step Up to the Big Candle View of Health

The candle analogy illustrates the power of the Chinese tonic herbal system. A small candle represents one's health without the use of superior herbs. The large candle represents one's health after a time of using the superior herbs. The superior herbs form the basis of the traditional three treasures healthcare system.

Jing tonic herbs have the ability to increase the size of the “candle,” our basic substance.  As the candle is burning down, Jing tonics can replenish this “essence,” thus building primal vitality and slowing down aging.  Qi tonic herbs strengthen the flame (our energy). Shen tonic herbs increase our psychic radiance, our spirit or mind.

Since only superior herbs contain the three treasures, only they can replenish three treasuresInferior and general herbs are useful, but only in correcting problems and not in deeply benefiting human life force over the long term. Although inferior and general herbs can be used to fight disease, only superior herbs can be used as the basis of the three treasures system. This sets the superior herbal system apart from other approaches to herbalism. When you step up to superior herbalism, you have stepped up to the ultimate level of herbalism.

Which candle would you choose for yourself and those you administer to, the small or the large?

Dragon Herbs is committed to a big candle view of health, a level of health that will have a greater and greater impact as more people become aware of this truly empowering system of herbalism!

What is a Superior Herb?

Here is the complete literal translation of Shen Nong’s description of a the superior class of herbs:

The Superior Class of herbs consists of 120 herbs. They are the rulers. They control the maintenance of life and correspond to heaven. These herbs are not medicines so the taking of these herbs in larger amounts or over a long period of time is not harmful. If one wishes to take the material weight from the body, to supplement the energies and nutrients circulating in the body, and to prolong the years of life without aging, a person should base their efforts on the herbs of the Superior Class.

The tonic herbs are defined as herbs which promote a long, healthy, vibrant, happy life, without side effects, even when taken over a long period of time. Essentially, the tonic, or superior herbs, are wonderful, healthful “superfoods” which benefit our well being in ways that more common foods cannot. And they have a protective, balancing, vitalizing quality beyond that of any other herbs. They are generally consumed as a supplement to a well-balanced healthy diet for the purpose of completing our nutritional needs.

These “superior herbs” are not considered to be "medicinal" in the usual sense of the word. They are not used to treat specific diseases or disorders. The tonics are used to promote over-all well being, to enhance the body's energy, and to regulate the bodily and psychic functioning, to protect the body and mind so as to create what the Taoists call "radiant health."

Radiant health is defined in China as "health beyond danger."  Radiant health is dependent upon one's ability to adapt appropriately to all the stresses that one encounters in the course of one's life. The tonic herbs are said to provide “adaptive energy” which helps us handle stress much more easily. It is possible to develop a very high degree of adaptability to the many changes that constantly take place in our lives. And by overcoming stressful circumstances successfully, we grow as human beings and we enjoy life much more fully. The superior herbs are thus a primary source of true human empowerment.

Only herbs that meet specific qualifications are ranked as tonic herbs. For an herb to be recognized as a superior herb (another name for a tonic herb), that herb must have been found over many centuries to meet six specific qualifications:

            1.       A tonic (superior) herb must have anti-aging characteristics and must aid in the attainment of a long life.

            2.       A tonic herb must have broad and profound health-promoting actions that result in a radiantly healthy life..

            3.       A tonic herb must help balance our emotional and psychic energy so as to help improve one's state of spiritual and emotional well being and happiness.

            4.       A tonic herb must have no negative side-effects when used reasonably, and therefore may be taken continuously over a long period of time if desired, yielding cumulative, long-term benefits. This emphasis on safety is in    accordance with the first law of Chinese herbalism – “Do no harm."

            5.       A tonic herb must taste good enough to be consumed easily and must be easily digestible and assimilable. Most of the herbs in the tonic category do taste good and, and in fact, any of these tonic herbs may be used in healthy cooking. Most are used commonly in a healthy Chinese diet. The tonic herbs are considered to be a major food group in the Chinese diet.

            6.       A tonic herb must contain at least one of the three treasures in such abundance that it can contribute to the building and maintenance of that treasure in one who consumes it. Some of the tonic herbs contain just one of the treasures, some contain two and some contain all three, in varying amounts and with varying power..

The vast traditional herbal knowledge that has developed through centuries of continued practice has led recently to an intense search for scientific understanding, and for new improved methods of cultivation, processing, distribution and consumption.
